Knit Whimsy!

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

Well guess what my mommy gave me! As you can see, it is an array of knitting needles. Now I can master the basics in time to teach my son. JOYFUL!!!! I am excited to get started, but since this is the day before Thanksgiving I might have to wait. You know, prep work takes time and energy. Learning new things is a skill best tried when one has had at least 5 hours of sleep.

something blue

I made this last night. It’s a stretchy garter belt for brides. I have it up for sale at my etsy shop right now. I wonder if anyone will buy it. I might lower the price to $7. I don’t know. I think it’s a cute idea. What do you all think?

Green with Envy

These are washcloths, I think. I am thinking about giving them to my appreciative nephew for Christmas. I don’t know yet, though. They are beautifully soft. I am really torn on what to do, exactly. Will he use them? *sigh* I hate giving gifts sometimes.

South Jersey Crochet!

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

So Ravelry.com has pretty much sucked me in. Yes, so much so that I have started the aforementioned group for South Jersey Crochet fiends like myself. No one has joined, yet, but there are a lot of people in the other New Jersey groups that might find my group interesting soon. Who knows?

I have also found Crochetville.org and Crochetme.com groups there. I am having a blast getting to see all the awesome knit and crochet creations. I know that I will have to get into knitting soon, due to the kid wanting to try.

Online Craft Club: Scarf Sherbet & Ocean Sky Slippers

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

I forgot to post this yesterday, so I will post it today :D

There you have 2 projects that are just finished… well probably not completely done. The scarf is completely finished other than if I decide to add fringe. The slippers are done, except for one of them does not don the dark blue trim around the top.

Check out more online craft club entries at the banner to the left :D

Knit Purl: knitting terms I didn’t know

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Frogged. I never knew that the word had anything to do with yarn. I just thought it was something people said in substitution for the obvious. You know like “Omg that’s so frogged up”. I have said it before, so don’t laugh.

It actually means to rip out your work to the point where you screwed it up. In crochet, it’s ripping.I am slowly learning the language of knitters. If my son is really serious about learning to knit, I will have to learn with him anyway.

Purl. Who would have ever guessed that pearls aren’t the only kind of “pearls” in this world. When I read knit purl, I think of computer code : 01101 ..  knit purl purl knit purl.

It actually means to work your knitted stitch through the back and not the front of your row.

Binding. There are a number of references one could make to binding. There is the binding of feet, binding of books, etc…

In this case it is used in the phrase “binding off”. This is the way one would finish a knitted project. The process of taking the loops off the knitting rod so that your project doesn’t have loose stitches hanging off the edges.

Faggoting. Now we are all well aware of the implications of this word, no explanation needed.

In this case, it is a means of making lace with increasing and decreasing knitting stitches.

I learned a lot today as far as knitting is concerned. My son keeps talking about it. I know that when the money gets deposited next week, that will be the first thing I buy. I don’t think he could watch me work with yarn for another 3 months without going stir crazy. He likes to wind the yarn into balls for me, but he yearns to make things on his own.

Thread Heads: How To Knit

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

I have always wondered how to knit and now I know how. My son and I are having a ball watching youtube vids about knitting. It isn’t as hard as I thought it was… well, at least not for the basic knitting projects.

I would probably get a few knitting needles just to make some really nice tube things or scarves that look really well put together. The closest I can get thus far to a knitting type of stitch is the Tunisian in crochet. I love it, but I am glad to know that the cross over wouldn’t be that hard to do if I ever decided to do it.

# You signed up on October 20, 2007
# You are #46611 on the list.
# 345 people are ahead of you in line.
# 10658 people are behind you in line.
# 80% of the list has been invited so far

Ravelry - a knit and crochet community

Looks like tomorrow will be the day I get invited to the community. I can hardly contain the excitement bubbling inside.

WIP update:

  • Finished the black slippers FINALLY
  • Still working on the blue and white dainty striped scarf. That is a project and a half.
  • Still no buttons on the brown/purple scarf collar
  • Sewed up some lingering family projects i.e. the underarm of the Man’s jacket, dog’s bed, socks
  • Started rectangle two tone slippers, experimenting with stitches
  • Still unsure of what to do with the black and red project. It’s pretty but has no real purpose.

The last one I didn’t tell you about before because I thought I knew what I wanted to do with it. Now I have no clue, other than for it to sit there and look awesome. Black and red are my 2 favorite colors to put together. If I had more red, I would make it into something larger.
