I have a Stash, wanna see?

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

This is what my mother brought me today, along with another circular needle and hairpin lace/stitch holder. I have in essence over 50 ounces of yarn right now just in what she gave me. I am so happy! I have a bonafide stash and a scale to weigh it on. YAY. Thanks again mom and dad for coming over today!

Repurpose It

Today I want to talk about what I have been recycling.

I just started spinning plastic bags. IF you recall, I did a project for a coaster with the plastic bag strips directly from cutting the bags up. Now I am not only recycling them into yarn, but practicing my spinning at the same time.

The pan from Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner had a wire handle rig wrapped around the outside. Since the pan had a hole in it, I decided to rip the wire handle rig off the foil pan and use it as a niddy noddy. Works okay, even though the yarn slips off if you do it the wrong way.

I read something about a woman who takes old newspapers and spins them into yarn. Pretty cool, except that I have not quite figured out how she does it. I get these slippery sales papers here all the time. How neat would it be to transform the weekly sales papers into a purposeful project?

Work With Me Wednesday will be resuming after the New Year. I am taking this time off to spend with my family and get some skills honed fiber wise.

Ocean and Lavender yarns finished

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

So I finished two of my yarns. The first one I spun is now in a necklace, but I haven’t quite finished it yet so I won’t show it till it’s done. The first was plied with cotton red thread, a bit thicker than normal sewing thread. The other was plied with my baby stripes yarn (purple and white) because I am tired of trying to figure out what to do with the yarn. The blue would probably have looked nice plied with the other baby stripes (blue and white) but I will save that for my multi that I have yet to spin. I love plying. It’s pretty fun and easy to do. Check out my flickr for some other photos of the process to this yarn.

My first handspun yarns

My first handspuns

Here you have my first attempts at drop spindling in order from top to bottom. I spun those both this morning. I am in love with spinning and am trying to make myself NOT spin any more yarn LOL I only have 2 little rolls of roving left and I want to take time to go through and figure out what what to do better on the next spin before I go into it again. I can’t figure out how people draft with two hands and keep the spindle spinning. I did it more like one hand is holding the predrafted fiber and the other hand keeps the spindle going. I think I like that better. Thinking about how I want to ply it, if I am going to ply it at all. Suggestions? I was thinking a dark blue thread with the blue to give it that worsted look. It is S spun (clockwise) you know? I love that way more than Z spun.

Christmas Project: Poinsettia

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

poinsettia

I was inspired, so I started this last night. I still have to add a leaf to the other side in green, cinch it all together with yellow french knots in the middle, but other than that it looks pretty good. What do you all think? It’s my own personal design. Silly me didn’t write down the directions on how to make it yet.

Blanket Therapy

So this is the super secret project I was working on as a present for my therapist. You should have seen the look on her face. She was so happy to get this. I was happy to make it for her. I hope that she uses it for a long time. She said that she is going to get some pillows to match it for her couch in the office :D

Would You Trade Yours?

Will Trade Husband For Yarn White T-Shirt

I don’t know if I would or not. I guess it depends on what kind of yarn it is HAHA They have a bumper sticker, too. If I had a car that was solely mine, I would totally get it. This would be a good one to wear to any local SnB. I am sure anyone who wears this would get lots of fun comments and questions about where it came from. Hehe, maybe I will just sneak the bumper sticker on the older car and see if the Man notices.

Magazine Whimsy

Monday, December 17th, 2007

I frogged that scarf I just posted about. I wanted the yarn for something else, what I don’t know yet. I seem to be at an impass. I need a heap of yarn to make some of the things I want to make, but I have not gotten to the store to get said yarn. What am I doing while I wait? I decided to try out some free samples of magazines.

I got Creative Knitting, Crochet World, and Interweave Crochet to start out with. Just testing the magazine waters to see if there are any that speak to me. I might start a subscription to one of them. I have not had a chance to really read through them yet. I just got the first two in the mail today. They are all comparable in price as far as subscriptions go, so it won’t be a choice made solely on finances.

Interweave Crochet has a heap of patterns and ideas for crochet projects. I really like the layout. It reminds me of popular women’s magazines. There are a lot of intriguing ads in there, too. Lovely bright pictures accompany the pattern instructions. Very easy to follow. I see a shrug I want to try and make soon.

I will let you know what I think about the other magazines as soon as I have had a chance to really get into them.
