The best in wrist support

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

So this is what I knit with one of my first handspun yarns this morning. I figured I should use some of it since I am spinning more. This was done this morning at the library during my son’s story hour. I just finished up with the lacing and had to block the thumb a bit larger…which I am doing while wearing it. Working pretty good so far. I have about 2 1/4 yards left out of about 17. Pretty nifty. I was inspired by Knitty Gritty yesterday when they were knitting gauntlets. This is my own design, though.

Navy Blues Front

Navy Blues Front

Check out a pic of the back on my Flickr. This was supposed to be a shirt with a high neck and twisted back straps, but something went wonky and I totally improvised. Why? Because brushed acrylic is horrific to frog and I didn’t feel like wasting all that yarn. It feels heavenly and it is soooo warm.

Vestilence Complete

I finished this completely today. It fits great. I can’t wait to wear it. On to finish my crochet Navy Blues next. After that? I don’t know. I will probably be spinning my BFL by then. I hope so, anyway.

Homemade Clay for Notions

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

Last night I decided to experiment with a homemade clay that can be baked into any shape. It’s a simple mix of salt, flour, oil, and water and VOILA clay. I made a few different kinds of ends for my knitting needles to see how they would come out. I believe that next time I do this, I will add some elmer’s glue to hold it together better. They are a little soft, even after baking and setting overnight. Right now, they will do. I am well pleased with the results. When my son returns, we will work on some other things.

Vestilence & Navy Blues progress

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Well I am alone for 4 days (my kid is with his grandparent, the man has to work) so I have plenty of time to fiddle around with some fibers.

Here is Vestilence at around 13 inches long. I still have 5 inches and some yarn in my roll. I think I will need another roll for the other side and maybe one more just in case I need it. When I hit Walmart I will be sure to get 2 more.

Then there is my new crochet project that uses the extended single stitch. Now I have been using this stitch to even up things when they get wonky on my other projects but I never knew it had a name LOL. I am making a pretty top out of the brushed acrylic my mother so generously bought me.

If I could open a shop

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

It would be a yarn shop. I hate that there are none close to me in my area. I mean, my goodness…to get to Woolbearers in Mount Holly takes about an hour. Uh, No. I will not be running that far up the highway to see wool and other yarns up close. Walmart is less than 20 minutes away. This is really eeking me out.

I would open a yarn shop that would be friendly to crochet, knit, and any other yarn craft. We would even be nice to people who sew. Heck, I might even make a section specifically for native crafters. I would also sell spinning supplies INCLUDING roving for beginner kits and all sorts of roving for anyone else. It would be the ultimate store. The prices would be reasonable and I would carry Red Heart, Patons, and all kinds of acrylics in addition to natural fibers.

Why?

Because I am an equal opportunity yarn consumer *wink @ Ravelry * and all yarn has its place.

I would offer classes on spinning, knitting, sewing, and crochet. There would be all sorts of things going on that tie into the theme of the shop.

What would I call this shop?

Well, if I ever get to do it then I would tell you but I won’t say it out loud. I know someone will hear it in their subliminal and use it :P Don’t laugh. I have had that happen on more than one occasion.

*sigh* If only the day to open that shop were today. What a great investment of my life it would be.

Repurpose It

Today I want to talk about what I have been recycling.

I just started spinning plastic bags. IF you recall, I did a project for a coaster with the plastic bag strips directly from cutting the bags up. Now I am not only recycling them into yarn, but practicing my spinning at the same time.

The pan from Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner had a wire handle rig wrapped around the outside. Since the pan had a hole in it, I decided to rip the wire handle rig off the foil pan and use it as a niddy noddy. Works okay, even though the yarn slips off if you do it the wrong way.

I read something about a woman who takes old newspapers and spins them into yarn. Pretty cool, except that I have not quite figured out how she does it. I get these slippery sales papers here all the time. How neat would it be to transform the weekly sales papers into a purposeful project?

Work With Me Wednesday will be resuming after the New Year. I am taking this time off to spend with my family and get some skills honed fiber wise.

Would You Trade Yours?

Will Trade Husband For Yarn White T-Shirt

I don’t know if I would or not. I guess it depends on what kind of yarn it is HAHA They have a bumper sticker, too. If I had a car that was solely mine, I would totally get it. This would be a good one to wear to any local SnB. I am sure anyone who wears this would get lots of fun comments and questions about where it came from. Hehe, maybe I will just sneak the bumper sticker on the older car and see if the Man notices.
