More yarn to tally

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

I just received a heap of yarn from a lovely Raveler. She sent me :

4 full skeins Pink Colorspun Plymouth Yarn

2 + skeins Blue Worsted Plymouth Yarn

3 full skeins Blue Colorspun Plymouth Yarn

2+ skeins Pink Worsted Plymouth Yarn

I am in awe of the squishy gorgeous that is still laying on my couch. What am I going to do with it? Well, I want to make my son a vest or something with the blue colorspun. The other is going into something for myself, but I am not sure just yet WHAT that will be. It might end up being a few projects or one large one.

Yarn Happy

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Today I went to the Mart and got myself some yarns. One set is for my mother in law’s requested blanket in her chosen colors. 4 skeins (3 -6oz and 1 -5oz) should be enough for the blanket *I hope*. She wanted deep purple and turquoise. The 5oz is the one with all the colors in a multi. That, of course, will be the accent.

I also broke down and treated myself to 2 balls of Peaches & Creme Cotton yarn in a pretty ombre:

I don’t have any clue what to do with it. I just wanted it. I don’t want dishcloths. I don’t use them. I might have gotten more, too, if they had more than 2 in the same dye lot. SO perdy. I might just site here and fondle it for a while. Any suggestions what to do with a little under 200 yards of cotton?

I have a Stash, wanna see?

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

This is what my mother brought me today, along with another circular needle and hairpin lace/stitch holder. I have in essence over 50 ounces of yarn right now just in what she gave me. I am so happy! I have a bonafide stash and a scale to weigh it on. YAY. Thanks again mom and dad for coming over today!

What are these fibers?

Friday, December 7th, 2007

I just read a really good FAQ about yarn and all the things that we normally hear. Things like gauge and ply are discussed, as well as the different types of fiber there are. I am really interested in all the different types of fibers available to work into projects. I am using acrylics so far because they are cost effective. I would love to be able to get some other fibers soon, though.

Yarn Folly

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Here is the list of Yarns I like so far:

Lion Brand Seal Brown (vintage, no longer made) 3.5oz
RH Baby Clouds 6 oz
Bernat Baby Coordinates 5.25 oz
Caron Simply Soft 6 oz
RH Super Saver (in 5 oz, 7 oz, 8 oz, and 16 oz)

All of it seems to be worsted 4 ply, except for the Bernat which is Sport weight. The labels always have a pattern on them. I saw one for a knitted diaper bag.

I have been looking around for yarn comparable in price to that which I get from Walmart. I can get a 7oz RH skein for $1.98. The baby softs are under $4, and I buy those only on sale for like half price. I also get the simply soft for $2.09 a skein. I have yet to find that online. I hate how most sites go by grams. Then I have to go crack the calculator to figure out how many ounces it is.

50 grams is the most popular weight for knitting yarn. Then when you read a knitting pattern and it says use 7 balls of x yarn, you go WHAAA??? That’s a whole lot of yarn. In actuality, it’s 350 grams of yarn which equals a little less than two 7 ounce skeins.

Then you will go through these sites and find 50 gram balls of yarn for like a dollar and you go *whoohoo* because you think you have found a bargain. It’s only a bargain depending on the materials the yarn is made from. A dollar ball of mohair compared to a dollar ball of acrylic… hmmm the mohair is much more of a bargain. Consider that 50 grams is less than 2 ounces of yarn and you will see what I mean.

Frankly, I’m tired of looking through yarn shop after yarn shop online to find great deals only to be shot in the foot. When someone finds a really good yarn bargain online PLEASE let me know!

I didn’t do all these conversions myself, I had a little help.

The Crochet Bible is here

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

I got my book( The Crochet Stitch Bible ) in the mail today. It seemed like it took forever, when it really didn’t. I also got my LionBrand catalog in the mail. I like the higher quality yarns, but I can’t see paying a dollar per ounce (or more) plus shipping right now…Red Heart hasn’t let me down yet.

The book is phenomenal. Page upon page of information, pictures, diagrams, explanations. I was so overwhelmed I nearly fainted. Seriously, I can’t believe the number of stitches that can be done with yarn and a hook. I think I will be busy for days.

Royal came in the mail

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

Royal blueI ordered a color of yarn that I had been looking for at the Walmart, but they took them all off the shelf. Of course, the first place I looked was online for the Royal blue yarn that I was missing. I want to add a bit more of a trim to my afghan. I also want to make a few more things with that color. I was able to find 2 skeins online. The price was a bit more than I wished to pay, but when you know that the color will be scarce till next year, you do what you have to do.
